History of CCC
In the fall of 2007, Kyle & Christine Hoover sensed God changing their course in ministry. Kyle was happily serving as a college and missions pastor at a church in Texas, but also developing an increasing interest in planting and leading a church. Through months of prayer and seeking wise counsel, the call to church plant became crystallized. They began several more months of prayer over the big unanswered question: where?
With their experience, the Hoovers felt that God could best use them in the unique college town setting. They also desired to use their passion for authentic church and discipleship to impact the influencers found at a renowned university. Charlottesville and the University of Virginia easily made the top of that list. In the initial research the Hoovers did concerning the area, they felt God nudging them that this was “the place.” Knowing little about the spiritual needs of the area, Kyle spoke with several pastors and denominational leaders in the region and quickly discovered that the needs of the city fit neatly with his calling and passions. Soon after, the Hoovers committed to starting a church in south Charlottesville.
Kyle & Christine relocated to the city in August 2008 and were soon joined by Bill Bray, Kyle’s friend from college and an experienced youth minister, who would serve as Kyle’s partner in the plant. There were also several others who felt strongly about the vision for the church plant and moved with the Hoovers to help them get it started.
Charlottesville Community Church began as a Sunday evening Bible study in the Hoover’s home on September 21, 2008 with 7 people. In January of 2009, the church began meeting on Sunday mornings and, after quickly outgrowing the Hoover’s living room, it moved to a neighborhood community center. In the summer of 2009, CCC began a series of community outreach events to serve the city and share the love of Jesus. These events sparked more growth, which led to the church relocating to a more permanent location at Cale Elementary School in August 2009.
Since our relocation at Cale, we have enjoyed corporately serving our city through July 4th at McIntire Park, ESL classes in the Southwood neighborhood, Halloween on the Lawn, summer Sports Camps, evangelism on Grounds and the Downtown Mall, and helping at Cale. In addition, our members take seriously the call to live out the gospel in their neighborhoods, jobs, and classes.
We strive to be a church planting church and to come alongside church planters in our state. We have helped launch a Spanish-speaking church plant, Fuente de Vida, and a church reaching the Crozet community, Life Journey Church. We have also expanded our global partnerships, sending teams to serve churches and communities in Venezuela, England, and Ethiopia.
We are thankful for what God has done in our church and we look forward to a future of spiritual growth, community, and reaching others with the gospel of Christ. Come join us!
